Starbucks Beijing
Extending a Major International Brand into China
In September 1998, H&QAP acquired a controlling stake in Mei Da – the company that owns the exclusive licensed wholesale and retail operations for Starbucks in Beijing and Tianjin.
The investment into Mei Da was a proprietary opportunity for H&QAP to migrate a leading American consumer brand to China. By working closely with Mei Da, H&QAP recruited management and guided the company's strategic direction. Mei Da has now made the Starbucks brand widely recognized and accepted in Northern China.
Following a sccessful trade sale to Starbucks in 2006, H&QAP achieved a gross multiple of 4.8 times for Asia Pacific Growth Fund II and 4.0 times for Asia Pacific Growth Fund III.
